May 17: Write a Note of Appreciation!

Read Philippians 1:1-11

A “Thank You” card…when was the last time you sent one?  When was the last time you wrote a note of appreciation to someone?  OK, I realize the traditional Hallmark version of this is not the only expression available to us today.  You could text someone, type an e-mail, or post something on social media.  You could jot it on a scrap of paper and leave it next to the coffee maker or in a sack lunch for a family member.  Regardless, when was the last time you verbalized a “Thank You” in written form?

In some ways, the letter from Paul to believers in Philippi was just that, a “Thank You” card.  Here is what he said:

“I thank my God every time I remember you…because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”  (vv. 3-5)

He was grateful for their gospel partnership.  Their expression of teamwork included things like…

  • Hospitality in the home of Lydia and her family.  (Acts 16:15)
  • Medical treatment and a meal in the home of a jail employee.  (Acts 16:33, 34)
  • Repeated financial gifts sent to meet his needs as he proclaimed Christ. (Phil. 4:14-16)
  • The sending of Epaphroditus, one of them who came to bless and encourage Paul.  (Phil. 2:25)

For all of that…and perhaps for more than we are aware of…Paul was deeply grateful.  And his gratitude overflowed into his prayers to God and onto this parchment to God’s people.  He took the time to express thanks in writing.

Above my desk is a cork board into which I can pin important and necessary bits of information.  On it, I have a calendar, a missionary prayer card or two, a schedule, and some other random pieces of paper.  But the most important thing skewered to that board is a card from my wife.  She took the time to intentionally select one from the scores of options at the store.  And she also hand wrote some words of appreciation to me.  I’ll spare you the actual verbage, but to say that I treasure that card is an understatement!

Pause and jot a note of appreciation today!  It will do you good, and it will be treasured by someone else!
