Read Genesis 11:1-32
I remember signing up for Spanish class during my freshman year of high school. My sister, the smartest one of the three of us, had taken three years of Spanish and was really good at it. I tried to follow in her footsteps, so I signed up and entered the classroom on the first day of school. Our instructor, Senor Swartz, stood in front of the class and read through the syllabus in Spanish. He spoke only Spanish. Everyone had a look of confusion on their faces. At one point, I looked down at my schedule to make sure I was in the right class. After he finished, he said, “Oh, I should probably translate, right?” At that moment, I knew it was going to be a long year ahead of me.
After the flood, God’s instruction was to multiply and repopulate the earth and spread out into the world. He wanted mankind to take their influence and knowledge of who He is with them.
When the door of the ark opened on top of Mount Ararat, everyone on the earth was a follower of God. Everyone in that ark witnessed the great power of God as He destroyed the earth. So what went wrong? They people didn’t take His command to heart but instead, stayed together in one place. Then they wanted to make a name for themselves by building a tower that was to reach into Heaven.
As the tower was being built, God intervened. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech” (v. 7). A lot of the people could no longer understand each other so they left the tower half-built and spread out in the world.
God didn’t create His gospel to be kept to ourselves. He wants everybody, even people around the world, to hear the good news and give their lives to Him. He wants the whole earth filled with the glory of His name. Our church takes this seriously because we are constantly sending out individuals, couples, and families into the world to touch the utter most parts of the earth with the hope of Jesus. Will you pray for the many people that are now serving overseas? Will you NOT keep quiet about who Christ is?
