January 3: Jesus, the Way, the Truth, the Life

Read John 13:31-14:13

“I am the way and the truth and the life . . .” (Jn. 14:6).

These were troubling times for the disciples. They were endeared to Jesus more deeply than they could have ever imagined at the beginning. Life without Him seemed unthinkable. Surely, they could and would follow Him wherever He went. And the idea of His death at the hands of angry men seemed . . . well, it seemed downright impossible. (See Mt. 16:21,22). No wonder they struggled that evening in the Upper Room.

But most of us struggle with the same questions that raced through their minds that evening. They are questions like, “Where do I go after this life? What are my options and how do I get there?”

As the disciples probed, they learned, first of all, that Christ was going to the Father. He was headed to a place which His Father God called “home.” In fact, Jesus even described it as a “house with many rooms.” This warm, loving house belonging to the Father is one of our future destination options. The other option? Suffice it to say it is “warm” by another definition. And rather than loving, it is a place of torment. (See Mk. 9:42-49.) Thankfully, it was to the Father’s house that Jesus went, and it is in this house that He, the carpenter’s son, is even now preparing a place for people like us.

I’m glad Thomas was in the Upper Room that evening. His request resonates with my inquisitive heart. “Uh . . . . ok. Could you tell me more about this place and how to get there?” Christ’s response told them secondly that He held the key to the Father’s house. His exact words are worth repeating, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (v.6). He is the way. Any other way leads to a wrong destination. He is the life. No one else is the source of eternal life.

How, then, have I answered these pressing questions? I have chosen to follow Christ in this life and I know that I will be in the Father’s house in the future. How about you?
