May 26: Praise the Lord

Read Psalm 103

God is good.

He deserves every ounce of every bit of praise that we can muster out of every pore of our very beings. Not just because of what He does, but because of who He is.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name” (v.1).

His very name is holy, set apart through and through.

What might have prompted David’s penning of this Psalm of praise. Was He simply recalling all the time he’d spent waiting for the fruition of God’s promise and couldn’t help but recount His faithfulness? Had he just spent time meditating on God’s Word and become so overcome with adoration for the God He served that He had to write it down in a song? Perhaps he’d just looked through some old journals from way back before he was king and remembered the times God had rescued him from the hand of the enemy. Or maybe the Holy Spirit used a walk in the garden to inspire David to write this great Psalm of praise. We probably won’t know until we meet David in heaven. But we can know this — the truth of this Psalm remains forever true.

Almighty God is worthy of all our praise.

Charles Spurgeon wrote, “There is too much in the Psalm, for a thousand pens to write, it is one of those all-comprehending Scriptures which is a Bible in itself, and it might alone almost suffice for the hymn-book of the church.” I agree. I mean, take any one of the twenty-two verses, and you have a taste of the abundance of God and His amazing character. Compassionate. Gracious. Abounding in love.

“For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us” (v.12).

Ruler over all, yet with the compassion of a father, He reveals Himself and His ways and does not leave us abandoned or wondering how to fear Him. He satisfies completely and forgives beyond measure. He gives righteousness to those who fear Him and to their children. He enters into relationship with those who seek Him and shows them how to live.

Yes, God is good. Do you know that God is good? Just look at all of this. And then praise the LORD with all your soul.
