August 5: Position of your Heart

Read Proverbs 6:16-19

On Sunday, we talked about bearing false testimony and the first step is not simply a matter of watching what you say or do, but where the position of your heart is. Proverbs 6:16-19 clearly states that “there are six things that the Lord hates”; that alone should cause you to pay attention. Yet, how often do we actually pay attention to the position of our hearts?

In today’s Christian Culture I am saddened on how things that were black and white have now become greyed. In 2010, I was mentored by a woman who loved the Lord and lived out Truth, but in 2012 I started seeing a difference in her life and asked “How does someone who portrayed such holiness and Truth begin to fall into the grey?” I was so moved that it caused me to write a creative piece part of which includes:

“…there is responsibility out there,
fenced in parameters for a specific reason.
This treason, this grey creation you have taken up
will only create distance, and the intimacy will be corrupt.”

In prayer for this woman the Lord showed me that this issue was her heart. The Lord tells Jeremiah in chapter 17:9-10 that “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick…” With that being said, shouldn’t we train and guide our hearts on a daily basis to be for the things God is for and against the things He is against?

The bottom line is, when you position your heart towards the Lord, you find yourself becoming more like the person He created you to be and less like the world. However, if your heart is positioned to anything but the Lord, the likelihood of you living out the attributes of Proverbs 6:16-19 is raised.

We are called to bear witness, to portray Jesus, who is the light of the world. How often do we find ourselves falling into one of the categories Proverbs 6 lists? God’s truth is clear on what He deems Holy and when we speak one way, yet show another, how are we NOT bearing a false testimony?!

Something my former pastor in Florida once said to me was “You may be the ONLY Jesus they will ever see!” This should light a fire inside all of us to continue to grow in the Lord and position our hearts in such a way that our lives reflect ONLY Him.
