Read Colossians 4:5-6
Growing up, I frequently was invited to attend church camps, retreats, mission trips, etc. With every invitation, I always said no. In my mind, I believed that I was strong in my faith and these types of events would not help me in my relationship with God. When I was 15, I was invited to attend a youth conference called the Teen Leadership Conference. I reluctantly said yes. When my parents dropped me off, I started crying because I couldn’t imagine staying at this camp for a week. I couldn’t imagine spending a week with people that didn’t know me, let alone care about me.
That one invitation completely changed my perspective–so much that when my parents picked us up at the end of the week, I started crying because I didn’t want it to end. That week I realized what it meant to surround myself with good people who lead me closer to the Lord. All week I was constantly reminded about how much I matter to God and I was able to watch leaders pour into the lives of teenagers. When I think back on how many times I was invited to different events and said no, and the fact that people continued to invite me, I am reminded that we can’t give up on people. God loves his people. Life change is an invitation away. Everyone we know is at a different place in their walk with God. Some people may be really strong in their faith but still need encouraged in their walk while others may not believe that they matter to God and need to know how much God loves them. We cannot stop inviting people to grow in their relationship with Jesus! Maybe the thought of trying to invite people seems overwhelming. If that is the case, I would encourage you to pick just one person. You never know how God will use that one invitation to completely change their life. Colossians 4:5-6 says, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Let us be fervent in praying that we make the most of every opportunity that God gives us to invite someone to church.
I am so excited for Welcome Weekend with Dan Lian. He speaks with a passion that will challenge us in our walk with God. If there was ever a Sunday to invite someone to church, this is it!
