July 9 – United: Country – Matthew 5

Read Matthew 5:13-16

Salt is a mineral present in seawater, where it is the main mineral constituent with a salinity of 3.5%. The percentage of salt in human blood is about .9 percent by weight.

Salt is essential for life in general, and saltiness is one of the basic human tastes. Salt is a unique food seasoning and an important method of food preservation. It is an essential nutrient providing flavor, texture and aroma.

So Jesus says that you are the salt of the earth. You are needed to bring hope and balance to an otherwise dying world. You are flavoring and preserving. Your life is an indication of the essential character of God. As a Christian, you add flavor and Christ’s aroma to people’s lives by being the salt of the earth.

The question He asked is, “What good is salt if it has lost its flavor?” In other words, if a Christian has lost his or her spiritual fervor, then what’s the difference between the old grain of sand they once were and the transformed salt they are now?

The answer is: no difference.

So don’t let the salt lose its saltiness because then it loses its usefulness! Salt will clump up when it is exposed to even a little moisture. As a Christian, let’s avoid this clumping up.

The German atheist philosopher Nietzsche once said that, if he saw more redeemed people, he might be more inclined to believe in their Redeemer.

What good does it do to TELL people how great our Savior is if they cannot SEE in our lives that we ourselves have been saved from sin? When you shine, you are showing people that you believe in God.

If I am in the light, I am showing other people that my life is changed and I am a believer in Jesus Christ. I will demonstrate it and I will verbalize it.

If I am trying to tell you how great my doctor is, but I am dying under his care, would you question his expertise?

If I try to tell you how great a cook my wife is but I am malnourished, do I really have credibility?

If I try to tell you how great my car mechanic is, but my car is breaking down constantly, would you entrust your own vehicle to him?

If I am a light in the world, I am demonstrating I believe in Jesus Christ through my love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.

Be the salt of the earth in a pandemic and afterward! Raise a Hallelujah!

“I’m gonna sing, in the middle of the storm,

Louder and louder, you’re gonna hear my praises roar,

Up from the ashes, hope will arise,

Death is defeated, the King is alive!” (Bethel music).
