July 7 – Back to the Basics – The Holy Spirit

Read John 14:26

We’ve walked through many aspects of the basics of our faith in this series, from the Bible to the Trinity. The Trinity is God, the Father, Christ is the Son and then we have the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is God existing eternally in 3 persons. We may think 3 people, but they all are one. As a new believer, this may get a little confusing and you may wonder why, but I would encourage you to keep on reading.

Let’s look back at the gospels for just a moment.

Jesus walked the earth, the one Son of God, our Savior. He walked the earth, healing and restoring people, teaching and prophesying and, when He knew what was to come of His life and His resurrection, He knew we would still need Him. So, He sent His Spirit.

The Holy Spirit.

Have you ever been in a moment where your life seems to unravel? Where one thing after another happens and you aren’t sure how you’re going to get through it all?

I bet you have, we all have. Living in a fallen world, striving to follow Jesus, is not an easy task. However, as John points out, we are not alone.

The Holy Spirit is known as the Helper, the Comforter, the Advocate, the Counselor and many others. God sent His Spirit alongside us to guide and direct, to comfort and counsel, to point back to truth and To encourage us to live in such a way that glorifies the Lord.

The Holy Spirit is not someone to fear or reject. The Holy Spirit is a gift from our Savior and given to us to guide and direct. The choice though, to listen, is our own.

One of my favorite passages is Hebrews 4:14-16:

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

I love this passage so much, not just because we have Jesus who can relate and sympathize with our weakness, but, because of Jesus and the access through the Holy Spirit, we get to go before the throne room of God Himself.

This series is “Back to Basics” but there is nothing basic about the Holy Spirit.

I pray and encourage you, wherever you are, that you take a moment and just enter into the throne room and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, praise the Lord for who He is, what He has done and what He continues to do.
